On a county roadway in Haines City, FL, DNE Asphalt Services handled milling, paving, and temporary pavement striping. Polk County inspectors observed the job from start to finish. The worksite included a dark paved section beside a lighter part of the road, with cones, traffic barrels, and vehicles farther down the roadway.
Milling and Paving the County Road
We milled and paved the road as part of the same project. The Federal Highway Administration’s explanation of asphalt milling describes how milling removes upper layers of pavement during rehabilitation, making resurfacing possible without necessarily removing the entire pavement structure.
The darker asphalt section extended alongside a noticeably lighter adjoining roadway surface. A double-drum roller was positioned on the darker pavement, with an operator wearing high-visibility clothing.
Rollers are used to compact asphalt during paving, pressing the mixture together.
Temporary Striping and Traffic Control Along the Road
We also completed the temporary pavement striping. Roadway markings serve a different purpose from milling and paving: they guide drivers on how to travel along the pavement. The FHWA’s work-zone guidance explains how temporary markings can define travel lanes and provide guidance through work areas.
Prominent yellow lines bordered a broad section of diagonal yellow markings near the center of the roadway. The marked section widened before tapering to a point, with diagonal bars crossing the space between its borders.
The FHWA’s pavement marking manual explains that diagonal markings are used to discourage travel across designated paved areas, such as neutral areas and flush medians.
Orange traffic barrels lined one edge of the dark pavement, while cones stood near the lighter adjoining road surface. Vehicles were visible farther ahead.
According to the FHWA, cones and drums are channelizing devices that help define travel paths and warn of potential work-zone hazards. Pavement markings and portable channelizing devices give drivers two different kinds of guidance, one painted on the road and the other placed around a work area.
A Thumbs-Up From Polk County Inspectors
The Polk County inspectors were strict and watched the entire job, from the milling and paving to the temporary striping. At the end, they gave us a thumbs-up.
